About

The South Asian LGBTQ Anthology is a project in progress, aimed at addressing the unique and intersectional lives of South Asian LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer/questioning) individuals living in the United States. After a panel called “Building a South Asian Queer Movement” at Creating Change (the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force annual conference) in February 2014, the panelists, Vinita Chaudhry, Ami Patel, and Sasha W, hoped for a new version of A Lotus of Another Color (published in 1993); that is, a more current anthology of creative, visual, academic, and activist work representing the realities for South Asian LGBTQ individuals in the United States particularly.

Currently, we hope for the anthology to be published in early 2016. If you have any questions about the project, or if you would like to join the editorial team, check out our FAQ section or e-mail queerdesianthology@gmail.com.

Editors’ note on focus & scope

After much dialogue and thought, the editorial team has chosen to maintain our focus on South Asian queer diasporic experiences in, or passing through, the United States.

While we wish we were able to expand the scope of the project, we are aware of our own experiences and limitations as individuals who have lived in the U.S. Moreover, the ways that we understand and define our identities are contextual, and we want to maintain the cultural nuances and experiences of living in the imperial United States. The terms ‘Queer,’ ‘South Asian,’ and ‘Desi’ all entail a specific cultural meaning in the U.S., and we want to unpack the deep meanings of those terms. A project with a broader scope would require recognition of different cultures and relationships to power that we ultimately did not feel we were able to bring to the project.

We wish the best of endeavors for any projects that hope to have a broader focus and scope than ours! Please feel free to reach out with further comments and questions at queerdesianthology@gmail.com.

  1. I sent an email to queerdesianthology@gmail.com on Aug 16 and did not receive a reply. Is this a legitimate endeavor? Also, there is no mention of a submission deadline although I remember seeing Sept 15 as the deadline on SAALT’s Facebook page. Can someone please reply to my email from Aug 16? Thank you.

    1. Hi Anil! Thank you for your comments. We are still working through many emails about editor and submission requests, and members of our editorial team have been traveling this summer so the email has not been checked/emails have not been sent as consistently as we should, so we appreciate your binging this to our attention. We’ll be getting to your email this week! Also, the submission deadline (currently Sept 15th) is listed on the main page.
      Best,
      Vinita
